We Fight to Live

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

April is National Cancer Awareness Month and while Breast Cancer Awareness Month is not until October, I felt the need to commemorate it, now. The disease does not take a vacation, the other eleven months of the year, after all.

Poem Artwork

Through every ruthless conquest
Faced upon life’s rocky road
And each embattled contest
That carries a heavy load
We trudge onward, optimistic
For the good this world shall give
Thus, for reasons so simplistic
We will always fight to live.

We envision bright tomorrows
Not the paths we’ve left behind
We seek liberty from sorrow
And calmness for all mankind
So proud of the steps we’ve taken
From the day we took the fall
Yet, we’ll never be forsaken –
We’re survivors, after all.

We shall face our true potential
With our destiny at hand
Since each life is influential
In this world, so rich and grand
We’re not bound by a statistic
Or the data that it gives
We are women, realistic
Joined within our fight to live.

Cancer will be defeated--soon. I admire the women fighting breast and cervical cancer.
