A poem about the unexpected moments in life that lead to the greatest of happiness.

Poem Artwork

Each life is blessed by many gifts
That we longed to receive
But greater still, our spirit lifts
Much higher, I believe
When hallowed by the splendid things
We never knew were there –
The simple joys that each day brings
To those, once unaware.

The beauty in a steady rain
That fell one summer morn
To aid a dry and dusty plain
So broken and forlorn
An unexpected gift so odd
And yet, a gift indeed –
The moisture that fell on the sod
So parched and so in need.

The blissfulness found in the sight
Of one last shooting star
Before the dawn of morning light
And dreams to pass afar
An unexpected treasure, true
Whose glory ever thrives
Within the goals that we pursue
Throughout our daily lives.

Each life is blessed by many gifts
We knew that we would find
But greater still, our spirit lifts
When surprise comes to mind
And we embrace the splendid things
So rich, so rare, so true –
The simple joys that each day brings
Such as a friend like you!

This poem is so reminiscent of the work of one of my favourite poets, Sara Teasedale although probably with a more uplifting message. She was quite a tragic figure and although she could write inspiring verse, she was plagued with depression and it reflected in her work. Not in this case. I loved the expressive style of this poem. Well done Jill.
