Fifteen Years Ago Today

A poet's look back to July 5, 1991 -- the day she first arrived in Galveston County, Texas.

Fifteen years ago today
Where the ocean met the sand
A northern native found her way
Upon a southern land
Where sea birds fly, both high and free
And dreams casually roam –
A place where she would always be
For here, she is at home.

The sunrise shone of pink, that day
The weather quickly warmed
Upon the ground, so far away
From where her goals were formed
Uncertainty soared on the breeze
Yet, in her heart was hope
That set her lonely mind at ease
And proved that she could cope.

Across the many distant years
This land is still her home
It is the place where childhood fears
Fell short to dreams that roamed
As she looks back from this wide coast
She knows God paved the way
By granting what she needed most
Fifteen years ago, today.

Even though I was based at Dyess AFB...Aberliene... Texas has to be my happiest time ever... Never met so many true and lovely people..
I would love to revisit...I nearly stayed..Not sure I would enjoy leaving the yellow rose, lone star again..Plus put put..lolol

I'm glad you like it here and praise it with a poem. I live and work here, visit the coast occasionally, and watch the egrets, mocking bird, and possem out my back window, but my thoughts are often far away on a cold northern lake, or California by the sea, in the misty moonshine WV mountains, or the pines of Atlanta's old south.

Just can't wait to get away.

Wonderful and descriptive look back and thank you for taking us on that yearning trip with you. Your poem is like a soft whisper on the breeze easy to read and relaxing to think about. Well done Jill.

I love my home. Dug in like those long maple tree roots. But I leave an opening if God has a better place for me. Funny how I feel a stranger in my own hometown. But sometimes we need differant horizons. Yours looks like a beautiful one, Jill. Strains of "Snowbird" are running through my mind. Lovely write...

It is a beautiful thing when you love where you live and feel like you are there by choice or by fate instead of by circumstance.
Take care,
