A Wind of Change – A Cub Fan’s Welcome to Lou Piniella

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

A poem of acceptance and gratitude for the new manager of the Chicago Cubs, Lou Piniella. May the sad history of the storied Major League Baseball franchise on Chicago's North Side end now! Go Cubs!!

When dawn rose this October day
A wind of change was on its way
‘Twas born of different style and view
Yet, it could make our dreams come true
This mighty wind had been for years
A source of joy and happy tears
For other souls but not our own
As we had walked our path, alone.

Our trek had traveled highs and lows
Yet, every year, heartache arose
Once autumn came and darkness fell
Upon our peaceful place to dwell
We watched our heroes stake their claim
Then, watched them fall and take the blame
When destiny opted to hide
Away from Chicago's North Side.

But then, one day, this mighty wind
Decided darker times should end
When into Wrigley Field, it blew
Changing the saddened fate we knew
This wind appeared; one goal in mind
To leave our storied past behind
And bring to life a new frontier
Devoid of waiting ‘til next year.

Dear “Uncle Lou,” you are our wind
Therefore, this thank-you poem we send
We have no doubt you’ll take the lead
And teach our Cubs how to succeed
With all the joy felt in our soul
We welcome you and your new goal
Because we’ve waited far too long
For your strong wind to come along.

Keep in this mind, this years winner can occupy last years cellar.
That is the nature of the game.
God Bless,

Yes, maybe Lou can get the job done, but who knows? Lippy Leo, Dallas green, The Boys of Zimmer, Dusty Baker, none of them could bring the Cubbies home, so now it's Lou's turn. Hope springs eternal on the North Side of Chiago.
