The Gift of Dawn

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

A poem about how the memory of the dawn, and taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of the sunrise, can serve as coping mechanisms while we travel throughout our, otherwise busy, days.

I’ve often wondered what would be
If only for one day
We stopped for long enough to see
The nighttime fade away
A time brought forth to view the sky
Changing from dark to gold
Since this joy, on which we rely
Is something to behold.

If we would take the time to stare
When the last hint of night
Vanishes, as if never there
Yielding the dawn’s first light
We would appreciate the gift
Shining before our eyes
That gives our souls a special lift
Each day, as we arise?

I’ve often wondered what would come
If only for one day
We stood awestricken, wowed and numbed
Amid the dawn’s display
If we would vow to make the time
To view night’s aftermath
We might just find our uphill climb
Smoothing into a path.

That must be why they hold Easter Sunrise Services. Worshiping the dawn is older, before the Egyptians.

This is very well done, Jill. True thoughts to ponder on watching a sunrise, and you've set your readers up to do exactly that through your beautiful words.
