Nightmare

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

A poem about how our worst thoughts do not often last for very long.

Poem Artwork

One morning, I knew in my mind
That something was not right
I felt as though I had turned blind
Due to a lack of light
The world outside seemed dim and dank
The inside was dull, too
Uncertain why or whom to thank
I fixed my morning brew.

Beneath the shadow of the night
I stumbled to the range
Still bleary, I struggled for sight
And prayed the dark would change
“What I would give for just one star...”
I said, as I, alone
Made my way to the mini bar
Beside my kitchen phone.

The darkness looked to last for days
No sign of sun or moon
The world seemed trapped within a haze
No culture was immune
The plants began to wilt and die
The grass faded away
And still there was no answer why
The world had turned to gray.

Just when it looked as though the earth
Had fallen ever still
The sun broke free to claim its worth
Upon each windowsill
The light came streaming through the shades
And woke me from my bed
Proving that every nightmare fades
To yield the day ahead!

Wow this is just splendid. When we write exactly the way we want and how we exactly feel then we all can relate or feel it. it is always an indeed pleasure to read your poetry especially ones with so much meaning and easy to understand. Keep writing and never stop. Love Aleja Bennett.

Yes some nightmares can be so vivid that even after we awaken they cling to our minds like saran wrap refusing to let us let go of them even in the light of day. I am glad the sunshine made yours dissappear.
