Beyond My Window

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

A poem about the oft sad state of society and a sincere prayer that in the end, our troops will be home with their loved ones to spend healthy and happy lives.

As I look beyond my window,
The stars set the sky aglow;
Yet, on earth, life seems quite solemn,
Only sadness seems to grow.
Fires raging, deltas sinking,
Record snows and record floods,
People driving after drinking
Far too many rounds of suds.

Children injured; children perished
When someone abused a gun.
Times once sacred; times once cherished
Fading faster than the sun.
Toxins in our air and water,
Hazards to our sea and sky,
Livestock we are forced to slaughter,
Due to a bad food supply.

Wars are rampant, protests plenty,
Yet, our troops remain on guard,
Breaking news, at ten and twenty –
A child taken from her yard.
What has happened to our culture;
Where, oh, where did things go wrong?
Have we become savage vultures,
Or been this way, all along?

Maybe I was raised too rural
Too naive and blind to see,
That graffiti-ridden murals
Exist beyond MTV.
But, I can recall a moment
Not as long as it may seem,
When our country proudly welcomed
Every soul who dared to dream.

I realize the times are changing
More than I prefer to think.
The world is still rearranging
Much faster than I can blink.
Still, I hope when all’s forgotten
And these days have come to pass,
We can stroll through fields of cotton
With our heroes, dressed in brass.

Sad indeed, but we need to have faith that God is in control.

Awesome poetry, as always, dear Jill.

It does seem that way at times. You've chronicled many ills. But our windows are much bigger than in the past with global news and deeper investigations at our fingertips. Statiistics will show that these times are better than any in the past.

Yes, wouldn't that be nice? To have a world at peace, no more hatred, envy, jealousy and the like. Good write.

Be safe,
Karen

Heartbreaking write; and a powerful reminder that we need to support our fighting men and women and particularly our vets who have already been there. As the sister, niece, cousin, and daughter of military personnel, this one hit home. Very well done; brava!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Burleson, Karen Lynn. :( >tears! <

(((Jill))),

When we forget the sacrifice our brave men and women who have served, who are serving, and will (hopefully) serve, God have mercy on us all; a powerful, powerful reminder; as a Veteran, I thank you for remembering! Well done!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Shout it loud, Jill. Let us all search within our very own souls to find the flaws. Keep in mind the sad truth men have been killing each others since the days in the Garden of Eden.
God Bless,
Lew

Jill, your voice rings true in this poem...our world is indeed in a state of evil doers and violence...We must continually pray that God will intervene to bring about a healing and end the violence throughout the world. I find your writings to be profound, prolific, and full of truths.

Yes Jill. And ours too from Afghanistan. The world is a mess right now. You're right. Let us pray for sanity and an end to this. Love and peace,

Regis
