The Angler and the Sea

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

A poem about the fisherman's bond with the sea and the sea's bond with the angler. Each needs the other, in order to live the way each wants.

The angler’s heart is with the sea
From morning ‘til the day is done
Parted, the two shall never be
In the pursuit of fish and fun
The angler’s hopes, while sometimes slim
Are known, when the sea grants his wish
Because, the sea also needs him
To catch and then, release his fish.

The angler revels in his cause
Each time he launches line and bait
Sometimes, the sea will bring him pause
Deciding he should sit and wait
The angler remains undeterred
His mind is focused on one goal –
A fish by nightfall is preferred
But, something he cannot control.

If, by sundown, the angler fails
He’ll tip his hat and drive away
Then, tell a million fishing tales
Of how the sea had won, that day
In dreams, that night, he will be king
A victor perched atop his throne
Who prays the light of morn will bring
A day he can claim as his own.

The angler’s heart is with the sea
Often resisting rhyme and reason
But, hand in hand, the two shall be
Through every touted fishing season
The angler and the sea are bound
United in their moments leased
Yet, when evening shadows surround
Who will declare the victor’s feast?

It's a good thing that there are many fishes in the sea. So many fishermen.

Can catch nothing, then suddenly out of nowhere macekerel just give up and land not on the beach caster, but are caught in the 7 hooks..lol I showed my mum a pic of a fish I caught, yup a suiciadal giant mackerel, lol they just take bare hooks, but the pic looks good for non anglers....Hmmm Angler, Anglo, just a thought, just watch out whilst i'm fishing for ms right..lol
