An Endless Flame

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

This poem was written as the result of a request from a Vietnam veteran who supports our nation's continued search for the soldiers left behind. He requested a poem to acknowledge the necessity of the ongoing search effort.

God bless and God speed our Armed Forces, POWs, and MIAs.

Each day, I say a solemn prayer
For those we’ve yet to find;
The troops who gave all they could bear –
Our heroes left behind.
They fought amid worldly disgrace
While maintaining their pride,
And each deserves a resting place
With their loved ones, stateside.

Some say, the years have come and gone
Why should we still believe?
And, yet, I pray the search goes on
For those we had to leave.
Our efforts should not ever cease
Upon the land they roamed;
Their families deserve the peace
Of bringing their souls home.

A candle stays upon my hutch
For those a world away.
I’ll keep their memories in my clutch
Hoping there’ll come a day,
When each soldier is home to rest
And each face has a name,
Until that time, I pray our quest
Burns like an endless flame.

As open as Vietnam is today, I doubt if MIAs remain. With Viet Cong commanders assisting, most of the remains of those lost have been found. You highlight the agony of a nation's mistake, recurring as we write, a part of our history that should not be forgotten.

Beautiful. This reminds, last Xmas I was at Grand Central 42nd street NY, a "drop out" was begging, people were walking over him. I stopped, sat where they would have to walk over me not him, and asked him some questions. He lost everything in NAM, wife, home and so on.. He needed some money to stay at some hotel. The sally ally turned up, I asked the girl if he was for real, she said unforunately yes. I was gobsmacked at how a war vet got treated, did pull one or two blokes in suits over to appologise at their behavour, and fowl lingo towards this man. I invited him for a bite in a food place just by the place and gave the money for his hotel... Not saying this to be a goody goody, but it validates your powerful message. A week later whilst I waited for the shuttle back to JFK, i went for a bite in the cafe, i was refused.....
