Fragile and Small

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

This poem was inspired by a visit from a friend, last weekend. Our friend, who owns several outdoor cats, brought over a young kitten of 6 months in age. A few days prior, a cruel individual took the liberty of shooting our friend's cats. Several of the cats died; the kitten survived, but had a gunshot wound in his paw. This story made me realize how fragile and precious life is and how uncertain life in the wild can be.

Poem Artwork

You sit and wait for mother’s call
A fragile kitten, needing care
You try to stand, but quickly fall
I worry how your life will fare
In six short months, you’ve seen the earth
Each clear-skied day and cloud-filled night
You were a tender heart at birth
A strong-willed soul, ready to fight.

Lunchtime appears and still you stay
So sure your Mom will be home soon
To entertain yourself, you play
Beneath the sun, shining at noon
You catch a ladybug and smile
Then, watch her as she leaves your grip
You nap for just a little while
As your Mom carries out her trip.

Darkness arrives at dinnertime
And suddenly, you’re filled with fear
You have not even learned to climb
Yet, you’re alone, with no one near
Your Mother has yet to return
Her stay on earth has reached its end
Thus, a hard lesson, you must learn
Death follows, just around the bend.

This hits my heart as I am a cat lover and it would kill me to see her hurt or suffer in any way. Those innocent animals, how can anyone be so heartless. Thank you Jill for your words.

Will be back on the den in a few weeks; won't be gone long. Can review or send messages, just not do my stories until membership back on. Already have a sponser, so no worry there. Just a temporary lull is all.

The baby whale they were keeping at Galveston, died. Your poem reminds us of our need for parents to care for us.

Heart touching Jill and infuriating to think of someone doing such a cruel thing.

A beautiful write. It reminds me of a kitten my Sister-in-law brought to our house when my kids were young. This baby cat had been abandoned by his mother. He was newly born. I watched my kids carefully feed him with an eye dropper until he able to feed himself. He was small enough to lay in the palm of my hand when he first came. He lived fifteen years and weighed almost 20 pounds when he left us.
This was a beautiful reminder of how delicate life is.
God Bless,
Lew
