Levee

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

Levees, when intact, provide a source of security and strength. When broken, disaster is inevitable. The same philosophy holds true for humans. When our inner defenses are sound, we are content; when our defenses weaken, our emotions flow. While our levees protect our cities; our individual strengths protect our hearts.

Poem Artwork

There once was a levee that withheld the weight
The storms, fully raging, were stopped at the gate
A pillar of promise; a keeper of peace
A realm of protection I thought could not cease
But, mist became drizzle and drizzle, a squall
As rain poured to earth like a grand waterfall
Then, before I knew it, the levee had broken
And sorrow commenced for the prayers left unspoken.

There once was a levee, protecting the city
Now, it lies in ruins, surrounded by pity
The madness and mayhem that came in the wake
Seems worse than the fact her protection did break
The city, with hope for the future ahead
Now, finds itself trapped ‘neath an ocean of dread
The levee gave way, letting sadness appear
Replacing the joy with a lifetime of fear.

There once was a levee, so sturdy and strong
That held back the weight of each earthly wrong
Then, one lonely morning, her support let go
Allowing much heartache and burden to flow
The levee brought strength by protecting the heart
From every misfortune, before grief could start
Her core is now broken, thanks to worldly pain
But, one day, I know she will be sound again.

GREAT metaphorical write and yes the connection between the two is easy to see not that this write clears the mind to think about it.

A wonderful write. Taken literally I think of New Orleans. But if we take it in a symbolic way. This is what can happen to people as well as cities, counties and nations. The levee can be anything from emotional breakdown to moral lapses.
Wonderful flow to this piece.
God Bless,
Lew

I like metaphors. They easily communicate what mere words cannot.

To be sound again, takes great trust in God and a firm resolve to go forward.

Thank you for your insight and inspiration.
