As They Look from Heaven (Memorial for the Utah Miners)

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

This evening, a public memorial is to be held in Utah to honor the lives of the six Crandall Canyon miners. I wrote this poem to honor their lives, with the hope of providing some comfort for their families.

As they look from Heaven, they see the world mourning
In sadness, we grieve for their families and friends
The mountain did not permit adequate warning
And six loyal miners ‘neath debris met their ends
In those fleeting moments, so dark and unnerving
The Lord reached His hand to bring them a light
He guided them on a path, warm and deserving
The instant He readied their spirits for flight.

As they look from Heaven, they see the world sighing
Each grief-ridden face is a sure enough sign
The many tears shed are still so far from drying
In honor of the six, now lost in the mine
Their families and friends still pray each will find them
Yet, find them they will, in a much better place
High above the clouds, where the staircase is golden
And each corner is blessed by God’s loving grace.

As they look from Heaven, they see the world turning
The days going forward, as life moves ahead
From this great tragedy, lessons we’ll be learning
But, here in this moment, we honor our dead
They will live forever in our hearts and memories
The bravest of men that anyone could find
By making jobs safer, we’ll credit their legacies
Rest now, precious angels, your last load is mined.
