Happy Birthday from the Fish

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

A birthday tribute for the fisherman, from his prey: the fish!

Dedicated to my friend, Fred Von Atzingen, for his 73rd birthday

Thursday, September 13, 2007

Poem Artwork

I took your bait, then swam away
Returning safely to the deep
But, we will meet another day
This is a promise I will keep
Some morning when the sky is blue
You’ll see your fishing line go limp
Then, as your hook returns to you
You’ll notice me, upon your shrimp.

You may wonder how you’ll know me
Since, in the past, I’ve come and gone
Look downward when the murky sea
Becomes a dirty shade of fawn
And in the shadows I will wait
Until the time has come to bite
Upon your chosen form of bait –
Food, for which I’ll gladly fight.

One sunrise, when the sky is clear
Your gallant efforts will be hailed
I’ll bring you a moment to cheer
When others notice you’ve prevailed
You’ll proudly hold me in your hand -
The answer to each angler’s wish
This plan will mean my final stand
So, Happy Birthday from the fish!

Wonderful! Fishermen rejoice --- to finally catch the big one that has constantly evaded them.

I'm sure your friend will enjoy this, and wish him many long and happy years of fishing - from me,
Kathy
