Scar

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

This poem may be a little cliche-ish to the "sticks and stones" philosophy, but sometimes, whether on the giving or receiving end, we could all use the reminder of how to best deal with such hurtful ideals.

Poem Artwork

Upsetting words can scrape and burn
Each leading to an awful scar
But, in due time, your heart will learn
To see yourself for whom you are
You are a strong, hardworking soul
With many gifts to give and share
It is your strength which makes you whole
So, live this life the way you dare.

Feeble minded people wound
This is the life that brings them joy
Their words may hurt, if you are tuned
Into the motives they employ
But, if you choose to walk away
The scars they leave will surely fade
You’ll keep the pessimists at bay
And from then on, you’ll have it made.

Distressing thoughts can claw and tear
Into the heart, if you permit
But, it is better if you bear
The blows and then, learn to forget
Should you allow the words to pass
They won’t have time to leave a scar
You’ll prove your life is blessed with class
And you’ll be happier, by far.

Bearing the blows hurts, but carrying them through life is so sad. Learning to forget and allowing the words to pass before they leave a scar is the way to go. Well worded and point well said.

Thanks, Glen

Jill,

Words do hurt. I have been on the receiving end of bullying plenty of times from family and other kids in school; years later I still feel the pain at times. I tried to ignore the taunts, but it was hard to do; the teasing and bullying was constant, and I still have a hard time trying to love myself at times. I am getting better at this, but it's a daily battle that I alone must deal with; nobody else can do it for me. Very well done!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Burleson, Karen Lynn. :(

The old saying "sticks and stones" was not true when told to us as children as advice against bullies and racists and is not true today. Your write brings that home...wise indeed.

Jill,

People don't realize the internal scars carried by those who've been abused verbally. Excellent reminder.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

A good reminder --- consider the source.

Well said. We, too, need to "engage brain" before speaking.
