A long, stirring echo was heard in the wood
Its message was one so clearly understood
Through the rustling trees blowing in the cold wind
That voice from the distance spoke well of the end
So far from the good visions, wise and kind-hearted
A shrill, wind-borne murmur said ‘tis time you parted
In the end, you listened; you had not a choice
Nothing knew life better than the echoed voice.
The voice heard the end long before words were spoken
Before the last goodbye; before hearts were broken
O’er the months, it bellowed; you chose not to hear
The signs that had obviously become quite clear
The rustling grew louder as the months progressed
And yet, in your deaf ears, you still never guessed
The ending was bitter and brought forth great mourning
Even though the echo gave you ample warning.
A long, stirring echo was heard in the forest
Its message was one, sadly, saved for the poorest
The well-meaning souls who gave all for the cause –
The ones who worked hard, without great applause
The voice in the trees said their careers were ending
And, still, these poor souls kept right on pretending
Until that last day when they had not a choice
Than to pack their belongings and heed to the voice.
