~ A series of poems written while on a recent business trip ~
Pittsburgh, Without You
I.
I Wish You Were Here
the drive
was interminable
without you
i must’ve written at least
ten poems for you
during my trek
(i composed a lengthy letter too,
but you’ll be relieved to know
i wasn’t able to write it down)
i wish you were here to witness
the splendor of this Allegheny sky
you’d understand
the beauty
the meaning of my poems
you would know
what i mean
when i tell you
i felt your strength
in the magnitude of
the mountains
could see your smile
in the ethereal, sapphire sky
could feel the tenderness and warmth
of your caress
when the sun kissed my face
i wish you were here
so I didn’t have to listen
to love songs
wrapped in static
conspiring to make me
miss you
even more
II.
Allegheny Mountain - Haiku
(I wish you could’ve seen the sun’s rays that prompted this poem.)
Layers of mountains
Mystical fog seeks answers
Sun’s rays urging
III.
Mountainview Inn – Check-In
In her trained
Colgate smile
she asked,
“Will someone
be joining you?”
(Couldn’t she see
my heart on my sleeve,
my sad, puppy dog eyes?)
“He’s always with me,
right here – can’t you see?”
my mind begged of her
Heart jumped to my throat, and
somberly, I answered,
“No, just one tonight.”
IV.
Hunger Pangs
it was late
when I arrived
settled in my room
i found that
i was hungry
chips? no, too salty
cookies? geesh, no
too sweet
i looked at the
hotel menu, touting
a continental breakfast
who cares about
continental breakfast?
i was hungry right now
right now
realized i was hungry
hungry for you –
breakfast
lunch
and
dinner
morning
noon
and
night
V.
If You Were Here
if you were here
we’d write
poems together
each line, a nuance
creating
salacious melody
(we wouldn’t sleep a wink)
i’d ask the moon
if you were here
to shine brightly
in the night sky, so
i could see the
light deep in your
espresso eyes
while my lips linger
on yours
i’d pull the stars
down from the sky
if you were here
and ask them
to dance with us
if you were here
i’d wrap you warmly
in my eyes
VI.
Tuscarora Mountain, Homebound – Haiku
Cerulean skies
Memories in soft clouds
Promise sunshine
Oh, my... Tami, this is packed top to bottom with poetry worth celebrating... "ethereal sapphire sky" "layers of mountains" lines like this make me close my eyes and Voila! I'm there! How clever you are to write such longing with such positive and beautiful phrasing.. it never felt sad, but the passion is in every word! One of your best, indeed! katy xox.
Sounds like someone loves someone an awful lot,definately the sort of love that hurts when you have to be alone.I could read in the lines that your love (or partner) was with you anyway in spirit and you described perfectly your aching heart and deep love for them.
I hope they feel the same,your holiday sounded beautiful in its landscape even though it was missing the veiw you wanted.

Tami, all of this was marvellous and expressive. I could sing your praises all day and it is obvious that you have deep inspiration. Who but a lover could understand? In spite of your obvious technical skill, you have soul. Your words reach deep into the hearts of others. My favourite (yes I am a Brit.) lines were

You describe feelings of traveling alone without one's significant other so powerfully. I did that for far too many years on my job, and I know these feelings well - even drove to Pittsburgh many times - alone.
