I went to put flowers on my parents' grave and this custom came to mind.
Cholera did plague a town in eighteen forty nine
No time for preparation for this illness was so feared
The Writer fell the coroner proclaimed that he was dead
The young bride did one final thing before other eyes peered
"Bury me with paper and quill along with jar of ink."
Before the lid was nailed she followed his instruction true
A grave bell stood near where she'd sit her cheeks so soft and pink
Tears on her cheeks she'd hum their song beneath the sky so blue
One eve the nightshift heard a bell and rushed to find it quick
With lanterns held they rushed to see from whence the sound did come
The Writer's grave they quickly dug with shovel and with pick
The bell rang strong as they dug down 'til bell no longer rung
Young bride was summoned to the
site where grave bell had been heard
Pine box unearthed the lid removed her husband gave a note
To his young bride who by his side said not a single word
As she was reading cried for joy "I love you." 's all he wrote
Only an author could write this kind of story poem, and that's you!
Apparently, back in those days, comas were sometimes diagnosed as death. When it was discovered by grave robbers that sometimes the insides of caskets were scratched by poor souls waking up and trying to get out, they devised devices like a bell, just in case. Hence, the phrase, "He's a dead ringer."
Many drinks in those days, especially alcoholic ones, contained lead from the containers they drank from. Drinkers would often fall into a coma, and wake up much later. Hence also, the source of the myth of the zombies, now being popularized so much as the, walking dead.
Ahhh . . . Jane, this one is special, very much so. Yes, cholera and other dreaded diseases were fatal back in tha day because there was no viable treatment for them. This poem took this reader into the mind of a man, a writer, so desperately in love. As I said it is special.
