Salmon Gone, Fishermen Try to Adapt on a Changing Coast Published: May 9, 2008 CHARLESTON, Ore. — So long, salmon. Steve Wilson is refitting his 51-foot troller to fish for the future. SMITH The cod are disappearing from the deep gray waters that stretch to the horizon from this gull-festooned town, a stark reminder that there is a finite number of fish in the sea and that man's growing appetite for seafood, if left unchecked, could eventually drive many species to extinction.

Salmon Gone Another bright dream is gone, Big Chinook salmon on the line, Picturesque coast fine-drawn, Pacific swells, rolling blue-jasmine. Shrinking dreams, dashed on shore, As bio-world sickens there, Appetites looming for more, But less is the divided share. Salmon gone, cod fading fast, Next on list, apparently prawns, So obvious — ocean life won’t last. What, when dreadful truth dawns? Rice rationed, wheat yield down, Barley, hops, double price of beer, Will we close our eyes, just frown, Turn our heads, refuse to hear? If human footprint we cut in two, Yet double the population score, Claim of progress is ballyhoo, Planet kill rate — same as before! That rate is forming our demise, As third world aspires to more, Second, desperate to actualize, While we grow, shore to shore. Will human progeny policy demand Reduction to sustainable number? Maybe the leaders of Myanmar have it right--Let Them Die. Emergency aid to save the low-lying masses will only prolong their agony. Trash fish and shrimp will come back quickly, but the land is ruined, and unchecked birthrates will quickly replace the dead as storms continue to intensify and strike the unprepared.

Humans are reproducing faster than our fish and seafood...or our ability to grow staples from our earth! We've got to take "minding-the-store" much more seriously. Important message well said, sir!

We've truly done it now. And now, we begin our war to wipe out sea lions and dolphins who, by their very nature, like to eat 'our' salmon, too. I also posted a poem about our now vanishing salmon called, 'Ode To A Fish.'

And I think our many environmental problems will now become quite apparent to many non believers.
