Dead Man Walking

by Tom Kitt — Read all 95 poems by Tom Kitt

The Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky rebelled against the Czar and along with others of his student group was arrested and sentenced to death. His imminent execution served to slow the movement of time into awareness. He was reprieved at the final moment.
This poem describes Dostoevsky’s epiphany.

Poem Artwork
Dead Man Walking

Dostoyevsky on his way to the firing squad
Died a thousand times with each step
Drank everything in:

Each mood, each whim
Each texture, nuance, shape, color
Saw everything through the eyes of God.

Remembered!
Felt time still to outside in
All is within! All is within!

Felt eternity in a moment’s thrill
Cried the tears of the damned in sin
And felt the loss he was about to win.

Brilliant poetical description of Dostoyevsky's epiphany Tom!
Love a teaching poem: Fyodor Dostoyevsky was a freedom maverick! So brave against the Czars....

'Felt time still to outside in
All is within! All is within!'
Beautiful, as is your portrayal of his lucidity during those moments before .... reprieve.. Powerful write.
Thank you Tom!
Love, Suzie :-D

A compelling poem, Tom. I cannot imagine what it would be like to be in this situation. Your poem makes one think. Coincidentally, I have a short story posted at AD entitled, "Dead Man Walking." Thank you for sharing this offering. Love and peace,

Regis

I can see life passing before his eyes. Yet as you said, he actually gained a reprieve at the last moment. I actually can relate to this story. There is a man in our community that was at last found innocent of a murder he did not commit. After 15 years of pleading innocent, DNA evidence cleared his name.
