An open-air garbage dump tarnishes the sapphire coast of Barrow, Alaska. Trash that makes its way into the oceans decomposes very slowly, littering coastlines, polluting ground water, and harming marine creatures that mistake the trash for food.
Ed's poem "Mother Oceans Sorrow " prompted this one...

"I have no doubt that some of these things that we're discovering out there have been there since the dawn of the plastic era in the 1950's," says Moore.
As plastic ages it crumbles, leaving so many tiny fragments that Moore found seawater in the Gyre contained more plastic than plankton, the tiny sea life that many ocean creatures feed on.
To jellyfish, the plastic particles seem like food. "It's like putting them on a plastic diet," says Moore. "It becomes part of their tissue." In his lab, Moore studies jellyfish embedded with plastic. "I saw that it had brightly colored plastic fragments inside," he says. "Pieces like this blue monofilament fishing line." _______________________ I wish there were a way for me beyond the realms of fantasy to view the world in colors true not like today's barbarian blue with words exploding in my head in bombastic shades of riotous red while my heart cannot be quiet in unkempt lands of violent violet the environment now bullshit brown matches the crap left all around oh, what used to be land of pretty pink how could we allow you to rot and stink Creator's beautiful colors of the rainbow we caused to lose their hue and glow the ocean a dump for industrial waste we foul what Creator gave with grace humanity in shades of tattletale tan can't be trusted neither woman or man for we allowed the shade of greedy green to overtake all others and make us mean or we plunder and explore causing blight while thinking ourselves pristine white and so i close in dismal black of night where even the stars are no longer bright now sun and moon are losing their light among fading colors sick with fright for this we will surely have to pay leaving a lost land of ghastly gray
There are so many problems in this world that need 'fixin'. I'm sure that your heart hurt as you wrote this one Sugar Chum. Well done!

Your words are sadly true, Eileen. Man has poisoned the air, the water and the earth, what of any value do we leave to those who follow us and how ungrateful and uncaring are we for the beautiful earth that was given to us. Excellent pen, My Friend, perhaps one of your very best.
Take care,
Sherry
You are so right Eileen! It really is a shame what mankind is doing to this planet. Why is it so difficult for the "powers that be" to find better solutions....
You've made the harsh reality of man's rape of this planet a taste that, just perhaps, other's will find distasteful and....just perhaps...do something positive to turn an iota around....an aiota at a time. Multiply this and we may just win oine day!
Love,
Susan
I agree with George. We did save trees by going from paper bags to plastic but in the long run, I think the planet will be worse off for it. The really sad thing is all of us can band together to recycle and do other earth-friendly things, but for the 100,000 of us that will, there will probably be a million other people who don't and I fear our small changes won't be enough! The entire planet is in bad shape, in more ways than one!
Brilliant poem of awareness, Eileen, and may we all learn from it and heed to the need for a safer, greener earth by doing our parts.
We no longer used the paper bags to save trees
But now we have created anther problem we
Rescaling but the biggest problem
Still the grocery plastic bags in the city dump!
This is an oustending message the sorrowful Planted Earth!!
Great job!!

We gave up using paper bags for our groceries and replaced them with plastic ones. We saved untold trees but in the long run we pay for it in plastic. I think one day we will all be buried in our own garbage.
I'm glad you were inspired by Ed to bring up the plastic issue; as well as another finely penned verse. There is a small way to help combat the plastic waste which is the surest evil of this age; I tried to limited buying as many "unrecycable" plastic containers as possible; true, not easy but still it can be limited if not eliminated. I don't buy breakable plastic items if I can help it, and foods packaged in # &5's * & 7 plastic containers, I try to avoid: as they are never recycled just trashed. Still, it is an uphill battle, as most people don't care enough to change their habits.
Thanks for the message and poem,

We abuse the planet. It is like cutting the branch on which we are sitting with aim of burning it for firewood but unaware that we are destroying our life line. Once the branch falls, we too, fall.GBQ
An excellent write Eileen
It's a very serious problem this ocean dumping
done by all nations world wide, no exceptions
we are all to blame yet all are passing the buck
A most meaningful and timely theme, Eileen. Evidence of our "insult" to the planet is everywhere. Much of this garbage we bury could be completely recycled. Of course, once again, it comes down to "economics." Sad. Thank you. Love and peace,
I buy paper when I can. And I recycle everything I can including paper. I recycle, drive my car only when necessary. Do the best I can to save the world. Everything can be done, the impossible just takes longer. Great write Eileen!

We so very sadly do, Tiger Lily, and we do it more each and every day on God's once green earth, blue sky, and wondrous oceans. We have become a modern day species of gluttonous pigs, or perhaps, parasites, and we probably won't be satisfied until we destroy every last bit of it.
And to answer the review below, I would gladly go back to a day when we were far less pampered, far less self centered, far less profit driven, and far more appreciative of the wondrous gifts God gave us all to enjoy.
And God help the dying, ugly, plastic world we now leave to our children and grandchildren.

Still, to what end do we end the pollution? Does anyone really want to go back to the days when we were not so pampered? I doubt it. You can see the price wildlife has to pay because of human . . . Progress . . . Still, I daresay most of us aren't like the woman who sat in a tree for a whole year, can't remember her name . . . Everyone wants this or that, at least they say they do. Some of the world strongest critics of the pollution of the world fly all over the world in private jets which is laughable if you think about it . . . Al Gore only one of those hypocrites, there are many, many others, the so-called expert rock stars . . . They aren't giving up anything, but they want us to . . . You touched on a nerve, Eileen . . .
