Wishing Well in 1963

by David Lester Young — Read all 1,103 poems by David Lester Young

In 1963, in Tallmadge, if one liked the "I Have A Dream" (MLK) speech. They were put back at the end of the peer (voting) line.

Back then, in 1963, Tallmadge was segregated, as was most of America. Today Tallmadge is integrated, but I bet in High School, they still have peer class ranking system hierarchy.

I was a Nottingham wallflower back then, with a Camelot President that would be assassinated that year. Still remember the Tallmadge flowing tears in Junior High class, when it was announced, JFK was dead. One of those moments that one never forgets, for ever and more than that .......

Wishing Well in 1963

Time bark ward
rings aloud -
Young sigh
Fountain of youth
deep well drain wish
I wish
I could be
being past tense
I wish
I would be
being present sense
I wish
I should
has been
trifle terse,

Be come
reincarnated future
dew echo sentences

Young Camelot
Tallmadge Nottingham Knight
Wish I may
Words
wish I might
World Dreamer
Write The Circle
in make believe
bard dreams
Vibrate The Center
Too Bee Poet Tree Beats
Navigate The Compass
enveloping words-worth
The Spokes
evolving, revolving
rhymes Literature.

But alas
dye stained
pauper pawn poet
hibernates a glass tear
Quicksilver weighted down
imprint impression
fang pains fear
Knot to be
naught too bee
petrified would
could
should H-ear
Torn asunder woe wrought
Word rip tides -
drowning thy World
The Circle
The Center
The Compass
The Spokes -
be broken.

1963 “I Have A Dream”
prays
“May The Circle Be Unbroken”
While The Center
in “God Bless America”
plays
“Amazing Grace”
The Compass
playing “Halleluiah,”
amid
“The Star Spangled Banner”
Wherein The Spokes
Words declare
Our Declaration of Independence

Make up
these United States
where Love bears
American Universal Understanding
That Truth
be Our Divine Standard

Civilian Scales of Justice
Where the  “Wishing Well in 1963
“I have A Dream,”
can be enshrined in Hope.
For without Hope
WE cease to be this nation of
Enlightened Words-Worth Dreamers

This poem came about this flip-end thought:
Wishing Well in 1963, MLK’s, “I Have A Dream.” Young Nottingham Knight sweet sixteen, in Tallmadge; flooded The Words,, The World,, The Circle, The Center, The Compass, The Spokes in lifetime cheeks, feeling livelong teardrops in bullet riddled JFK Camelot assassination. in the bark reining Poet Trees

A reminisce of what was missed and what was learned and earned. Now feeding the poet from Tallmadge today. A long time away.

In 1960 we had a mock Republican convention. Nixon won the nomination handily. There was only one questionably dark skinned recent arrival girl in our class. Most of the class felt that people of color were inferior and glad that they were keeping to the south and places like Chicago, Milwaukee and Ohio. Some still feel that way unfortunately. But our town now has even black business owners.
