in the car we talked about life...love
i studied your profile as you drove

it was effortless to imagine
how beautiful your face must have been
in youth, before the years left their mark

and then i thought about wisdom,
experience, appreciation for women
and all they can bring to a man’s life

and i realized, i would rather know
the man beside me today, than the younger
who still had so many roads to travel

so many hard lessons yet to learn
before arriving at this sacred, mature place
where at last we found ourselves face to face

so obviously displayed was joy and pain
shimmering in aqua pools of your eyes

i knew there was nothing now... nothing
between us and the realization of truth
no masks, no disguises, no parts to play

later i tried.... oh how desperately i tried
to keep my composure while you
enfolded delicate hands with your large ones

as you tasted each pink fingertip like candy
and worshipped my palms with soft kisses
that licked their lined flesh like flames

everything in me wanted to say “ yes”
as with tender touch and fiery words
body and soul awakened from a long sleep

you know the words i need to hear
but please promise you won’t say them
unless they fully possess your soul

for passion alone will never quench our thirst
and time is too far spent now to underwrite
the luxury of another broken heart
