I Do Not Love You

I do not love you as a collector
worships an object of fine art;
though you are a masterpiece of heart
so fine of face and flesh.
No I do not place your image
behind the safety of a glass case
fear to explore your depths
or caress the surface of your need.
I love you in that fruity, earthy way
a woman desires a man...and yet
I admire you like an iconic wonder.

I do not love you like the young girls
who follow the actors and in a frenzy
wildly throw themselves, naked,
at the feet of an arrogant player
Oh no, I don’t throw myself, my heart
the nakedness of soul and body
at shallowness, even if talented,
It is your humility, unpretentiousness
the charm of a man who knows women
and loves in the most positive, caring way,
that fashions the shape of my adoration,
ignites the fires of my passion.

I do not love you because of poetry
though you are poetry to me, and
have always been the perfect love song.
And even if there were no words
no lyrics, your poetry, your song
would still move me to tears of joy.
I do not love you for anything
other than the sake of love alone.
Be it in your thoughts, your dreams,
your poetic words, or your arms.
I do not love you less for the distance
I simply, easily, completely...love.
