Erato's Power

Erato you are a force to be reckoned with
who oft steals the poet’s sleep
with thoughts of love’s sweet escape
or desire's dark dungeon

who owns the minstrel’s tongue
where milk and honey offerings
you return again to sons of men

clothed by Aphrodite in gossamer gown
and crowned with Apollo’s blessing

daughter of Uranus and Gaea
your flowing skirts overspread sky and earth

the honeyed scent of your nectar
like wildflowers of the elysian fields
causing the hopeless to hope

Erato you are merciless
when with fire of the flesh
and obsession of the mind
you afflict mankind

and seal up all escapes from your prison

You sup with the Graces
and dialogue with Hirmerus
where you have been schooled
in both charm and seduction

upon the wings of Pegasus you fly
and none who has a heartbeat
is safe from your power

It is you Earto who has inspired
the most sublime poetic words

and who has influenced
the murder of innocence
the blood shed by crazed obsession

Erato you are a force to be reckoned with
the muse of love and hate
pleasure and pain
