I remember the way he first looked at me
in a vineyard where bright butterflies played.
My hair fallen, disheveled around shoulders
vulnerably bared to the hot midsummer light.
He was a new sun, burning tender white skin
under dark searing heat of his fiery eyes.
Was I his victim, his prey or his predator?
He sketched my likeness on stretched canvas
and with soft sable brushes dripping nature
painted it red shades, tones of gold, hues of sex.
His canvas a combination of autumn mornings
and halcyon afternoons when love takes its rest
among firm ripening, purple grapes of opulence
in patient anticipation of wine’s intoxication
to quench all his nights of thwarted desire.
I will never forget the first time eyes met
and two souls embraced across the span
of then and now, here and there, forever.
Antiquity and infinity passed between us
in the space of a miniscule fragment of time.
I knew the artist could paint me any color
and I would be the portrait of love for him.
Flaming hair wind-tousled on bare shoulders
arms open, to welcome him into my world.
Amid orchard rows where we took our fill
of love, lust and all positions between the two.
Eternal flames are never smothered by rain.
Eternal memories are not faded away by time
or destroyed by all that might intervene in eons
since I first looked at him looking at me.
This portrait is passionately painted in the intoxicating hues of romantic love...one upon which the sun never sets and the moon never relinquishes its grasp.

In those vineyards the fruits got sweeter, the scent more pungent and the breeze got warmer by desires...
And if there were a poetess around...who knows........love?
LaBelle this is beautiful and I live in this world as I feel how my husband looks at me as though it is the first time evertime. Thank you for taking me into your words as thought they were mine.
I am drawn into your verses, Belle. Privileged am I to be able to partake of the sentiments expressed therefrom. Thank you for sharing you gift. Love and best wishes,
This is the most sensuous thing I have read since Thomas Hardy's description of The Froom Valley in 'Tess of The D'Urbervilles'! Simply beautiful and evocative. Love, Diana.

Oh so nice, my friend, is this lovely ode to first remembrances . . . I loved this . . . "Was I his victim, his prey or his predator?" . . . Usually it is a combination of all three when things work the way they are supposed to work . . .
Soft sensuality wrapped in the dream world of love. This write brings the reader into a dream like setting to peek at what a fairy tale like love should be. Well Done dear Belle.

This poem blew me away...It is magnificent. I was captivated reading this brush of lust in a portrait. Honestly, the best poem I've heard this year... Just beautiful.
This is a sentimental and epic story about a young man, injured in the Viewnam War, who returns to Dallas, Texas, in 1964, and begins rebuilding his life. Set against the rock and roll era of the early 1960’s, when casual sex and recreational drugs w
