Let’s bring the hammer
down on Poe
cause if you’ve read him
then you know
Poe was just a spaced out mess
did his feeble mind crack
under grief and stress?
anyway.. a book of Poe isn’t fit
for any boy or girl to get
he penned all those dark
and morbid things
that to many spines a shiver brings
let’s censor Edgar Allen for sure
he’s drunk demented and impure

And next on the censor’s list
well let’s see....
Neruda it just has to be
why that dirty man wrote odes
to naked beauties
exposin their twinkies
describin their tooties
imagine what a terrible tragedy
if innocent folk like you were to see
such scandalous erotic poetry
of unbridled naked ecstasy
aim well and bring the hammer
down perfect and slow
ole Pablo Neruda has to go

Brukowski deserves a fatal blow
no dirty words he wouldn’t say
or gross depravity he’d not show
he wrote unseamly social sewage
and reams about sex too
oh yeah, Charles would corrupt
all the righteous people like you
he was crude, he was raw
most deserving of hell?
between CB and Satan
it had to be a draw
so smash him down good
with that censor’s hammer
if he was still alive
he should be thrown in the slammer

Now Byran was a man
with no morals at all
he quickly to the vengence
of the censor should fall
too many women in too many verses
too much advocating of “Free Love”
brings down righteous curses
take him and his
nar do well friend Shelly
out of circulation
ban such libertine poetry
from each god-fearing nation

If he wasn’t dead
Ginsberg would be next
on the censor’s list to crush
he reverenced nothing
and wrote no mush
for powers that be, no respect at all
time for revolution
and empires to fall
and did you hear? Allen was Gay
let anyone read him?
why that would be the day
censor that bothersome
gay troublemaker
send Ginsberg away stiff and cold
to the poetry undertaker

Last but not least
let us speak of the ladies
Plath and Sexton... such shadies
poems of death, poems of sex
why if we should read them
they’d make us moral wrecks!
bring down the hammer
and censor each line you can
of those degenerate women
Sylvia and Anne

And please don't forget
to add Homer and Ovid
they should both be a censored poet
two more depraved or libertine
In the ancient or new world
have ever been seen
making poems of making war
and making love their toys
Homer And Ovid, those naughty boys
swing that hammer and crush them quick
before the Odyssey
or Metamorphoses stick.


And now that your hammer
has cleaned up the world of poetry
do you think censorship will favor you
and freedom you’ll see
oh no, the hammer has two ends
when censorship starts
the loss of all freedom begins
each poet gagged or locked away
diminishes knowledge
and hastens the day
when you can’t post a sermon
or even a prayer
go ahead swing that hammer
it’s taking you there
