To The Unknown Goddess
By La Belle Rouge


he casts his longings on a north wind
like cold ashes of an unsung hero
cremated for a lost cause

voice ascending into a black firmament
echoing a name known only to his soul

a face revealed to his inquisitive eyes
in fragile volumes yellowed with age

beauty of a face he cannot remember
yet will not forget in ten lifetimes

her scent lingers in his fitful dreams
the taste of her still sweet on his tongue

he lifts the glass of his undying devotion
and offers an eternal toast


pledging his life, his blood
to the well known but unknown goddess
who owns his days, haunts his nights
