And So It Begins

All things must have a beginning
But not all have an end
And so to tell my tale
I must now begin

Condemn me if you must do so
For damnable I surely be
But show a little pity for
Wretches such as me

Journey from light to darkness
And I will show you the way
Pray to your god above
To see another day

~Life As It Was~

I oft remember the former days
before my heart grew still and cold
before the blur of countless decades
before my dark tale had been told.
Once rosy were my lips and cheeks
beneath a bright sun-kissed sky.
Centuries begotten now by weeks
'til life is but a grotesque evil lie.
Those who walk the steamy streets
here in old New Orleans towne
unaware of cold death that greets
the living when the sun goes down.
No one knows my face or name,
No one knows my wicked shame

Born the daughter of a wealthy man
Envied by the lower class of women.
Attention of many men to command
In gifts from my suitors swimming.
My mother was a dusky quadroon
in a pleasure palace in Baton Rouge.
Aristocratic father was captive soon
to the caramel beauty’s deluge.
Red hair belied my secret so black
Raised in privilege by noble French sire
but rumors oft spread behind his back
had brought him much pain and ire.
He promised me to a merchant king
but life another course would bring.

This sounds like my life in a nutshell. Even though death loomed in my thoughts, God had another course for me to take. I also agree with Ron that a fine writer penned these words, because these words draw the reader into an abyss of darkness and frailty, of fear and unsure steps.

These words are so haunting and so descriptive that I see myself in there crying my plight that was supposed to be my life. Even though this is set in New Orleans, this poem of darkness can be anywhere, and others like me can identify with some of these circumstances. You have penned this very well La Belle, thank you for sharing.

May the Lord Bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and walk by your side. With love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister Barbie.

Oh my... and oooooooo... poor you! :(( some strange thing's bars have been rattled somewhere. Take care out there on them mean, Halloween streets, Angel....

As always, exquisite and elegant writing, Belle. My heart sinks when it gets to October cos Halloween really don't float my boat and I just find it tiresome. But your writing is always pure joy, whatever the genre, because your skill and subtle expertise transforms any subject matter into living art. I love this blend of "real-life" with what we know is going to potentially develop into the promise of the surreal and macabre but what will always also be convincing and classy. Forgive me, sickness apart, for being such a pooper. But your storytelling is always delicious and a treat for the senses. Luv'ya and thanks for healing thoughts and prayers. xx

Belle, you have the touch my dear friend. "my mother was a dusky quadroon in a pleasure palace in Baton Rouge". Destitution's child as it were Belle. Love that line. It draws such a artistic form on the paper with your pen. May you know the gentle warmth of love and the surround of peace this day. Jon Michael

"...captive soon to the caramel beauty's deluge..." how good that is in a fine captivating opening volley, Belle; you're on a winner here with customary elegance and superior turn of phrase.
