His Last Rose
By La Belle Rouge

he could not do justice to her beauty
in the words of adoration he penned
for he knew her from the inside out
he had loved a few, lusted for many
but none other emanated a fragrance
such as hers; it lingered in his dreams
and often invaded his waking thoughts
more lovely than it had been in spring
this full blossoming of her femininity
in season of his late autumn and hers
memories of unforgettable gardens
other roses; their petals, their scent
sharp thorns that pierced his heart
in summer when his desire burned hot
and ardor tended the garden of love
with potent fervor of tender passion
summer roses possessed his reveries
but she was love’s only autumn rose
the last flower of his fading summer
soon winter’s drifted snow will caress
her withered petals with frigid fingers
but now, for a time, she yet bloomed
a brief Indian summer enveloped him
in crimson colors of her vibrant love

Belle, you've captured joy and melancholy with the title alone --"caress her withered petals with frigid fingers" is a dynamic description -- this poem grips with honest emotions -- I bid you love and peace my dear friend -- Jon Michael

The love of a rose, like Indian Summer, is short. We must catch it while e can, thorns or not.

Belle, The rose has always been a symbol of love and is by far the most perfumed flower out there---as always a beautiful and romantic poem!

"...the last flower of his fading summer"
'tis the last rose of summer'..i can't help hearing
the music and Moore lyrics but your words and the
picture, a perfect (living) still life, sing with
an equally haunting voice.

The rose is a symbol of hope and joy; it is first among flowers and expresses beauty and grace. Your poem exudes all of this...wonderful imagery and beauty.
