To The Gods Of Poetry
By La Belle Rouge

they dwell on mysterious Mount Onlyus
where they reign as Great Gods Of Poetry
everything they pen is precise perfection
if you don’t believe it, just ask one of the
chosen few who rule the domain far below
anything commoners write is so mundane
a collection of clichés, deeply disappointing
and doggedly disdainful to the sensibilities
of those who use the F word as carelessly
and often as “The” or “And” in preposterous
poetry that makes sense to themselves alone
shock value can only go so far in literature
before it becomes merely mundane clichés
of Poetry Gods who have fallen far from
or never risen to the pinnacle of their craft
but don’t know it, or flatly refuse to admit it
they expect worship of their words while
their thunderbolts dissect verses of others
though I cannot tear another’s work apart
in the deceptive guise of “Helpful suggestions”
this is an effort to enlighten the Poetry Gods
to the painful reality; they aren’t divine yet!
Of course they won’t appreciate the effort
since Mount Onlyus is too far above lowlands
to even hear any voices other than their own

Another write with a serious twist and a different direction...but the flair and the art are one hundred percent there. Describes many, even here at AD. There are some that never get read as much as the ones who think are poetry Gods but who outshine them at any level just the same. I have often thought of giving up but realized...I am really doing it because it is who I am...and it would be difficult to give up on me really.

Interesting that some set themselves up as arbiters of taste for such a little-read art as poetry. Anyone know a poet who makes a lot of money? Very few. The ones who do make money, make it from pretty simple stuff that is palatable for the bulk of the reading public.
I don't worry too much about it myself. I write for myself and if someone likes it they can read it, or not.Imaginative write her La Belle. May you write many more. Bob

If Mount Onlyus is your invention, I salute you for your creativity.

There are two places where poetry gods reside as far as I know. You seem to be referring to the hip-hop culture with your reference to the “F-ing"insults that garner millions from faithful masses of young with spending money for such drivel.

On the other hand, are the poetry elite who lord over quarterly journals, selection of poetry laureates, and such, who find most popular poetry something like country music compared with classical. Guess who gets the most listeners and readership?

Frankly my dear, LaBelle, I don't give a damn what the critics say. My poems are searched and read every day. Some are being taught in schools. While not making millions, they're changing lives and not catering to fools.

Once again, your creativity and breadth of poetry is amazing. I love what you do… Please keep writing from your heart.

Ron

Sounds as if you've crossed swords with one of the self-appointed arbiters of poetic taste. Illegitimi non carborundum!!!!

Keep on writing!

Aggrandizement flourishes in each and every discipline. Where mankind goes, can ego be far behind? Among those that brandish the pen in poetic endeavor, in the chorus girl line, politicians atop soap boxes or thespians practising the ultimate form of child’s play they stroll in grand parade. Those attempting to raise their worth as they pat themselves relentlessly upon their own backs, cock of the walk. The screeching gulls yipping dogs intent upon chiselling out their prominence from sand castle values. With the advent of night they become baying hounds in want of the wolf’s howl. From Mount Onlyus they traverse the back roads leading to sandlot playing fields. You’ve branded their ilk with fine poetry Belle. I wish you love and peace my dear friend. Jon Michael

Cleverly witty, satirical, meaningful and also most apt and timely; thank you for sharing, Belle. Love and best wishes to you,
