The Wendigo is a legendary monster of the Algonquian Native Americans. It is said that a greedy person or one that is bad to others will be turned into a Wendigo to wander alone and live off the flesh of those he captures and kills.

Poem Artwork

The Wendingo

In the far north land covered in snow
Where Chippewa live and fur trees grow
Comes a dreaded monster from below
Fearsome of face and of body deformed
With a heart as cold as a winter's storm
The Wendigo

Pungent smell of death doth around it lie
It creeps 'neath moons as clouds drift by
Blowing Fetid breath, besotted on blood
None can kill it or ever hope they could
A mother's fright, her child's nightmare
Forever famished for flesh it does not care
What innocent lives its great hunger takes
It rips to shreds and its humanity forsakes
The Wendigo

Fifteen feet tall, stark collection of bone
Once the native village was called its home
Robbed his neighbors, a greedy man for sure
Treated no one fairly with a heart impure
Bony fingers with claws, children to steal
Flesh changed into ice nothing left to feel
Hear its moans though the dark forest deep
Keep watch over lodges your lives to keep
From The Wendigo

A native legend or a creature from hell?
The shaman knows as his dream he tells
Of the undead one who hunts prey well
Of midnight cries and bare, bloody bones
Of howling, icy winds that carry the moans
Of The Wendigo

Spooky curse that I am certain I have encountered in my life. I'm thankful I was able to break away and free myself from the curse.

I've never heard of a Wendingo. But your poem breathed life into one. And, as I read, it seemed to me that the Wendingo really could be a metaphor for winter.
