For Halloween. Tradition and some religious texts maintain that the spirit stays close to the physical body for three days after death.
The Graveyard Cat
twilight had fallen
menacing mists rising
I had lost my way
in the city of the dead
up one path, down another
searching for the place
you had laid your head
only two days had passed
since under clay sod
they laid your body down
I secretly smiled and hoped
eternal rest you had found
not that you deserved it
but hope eternal springs
within the human breast
or.....so they say, it seems
I saw him in the distance
I knew I had found your grave
his eyes glared gold in the gloom
I would go no closer My Dear
I'd wait until after three days
that mystic black cat was you
guarding your unweathered tomb
I know you'd like to hurt me
scratch my eyeballs out
I'll bring flowers tomorrow
when it's safe to be about
and you have finally gone
wherever it is you must go
I threw the dagger in the river
Darling, no one will ever know
You betcha! This is my kind of macabre poetical writing. You could extend this in so many ways and people such as I would look forward to your postings.
Perfectly rhymed and perfectly macabre with the insinuation that you, the writer, was coming to pay respects, and perhaps, determine whether or not the dagger had done its job and did him in. So that's why black cats conjure up such fear? "Scratch your eyeballs out" is almost as bad as having an egret spear them and choke them down to regurgitate later in the nest for the youngins to eat.
Happy Belated Halloween !
Love ya!
