If I Should Ever

If I should ever hurt you
it would wound my heart mortally
and there would never be
enough tears to wash my soul

If I should ever betray your trust
in the most minute way
there would be no self forgiveness,
no balm to heal my heart’s pain

This has not been love at first sight,
no instant poetic admiration, infatuation
It’s been day in, day out, sharing
of our deepest thoughts and feelings

You have dried my tears,
shouldered my pain so nobly
too many times to count or remember
and I have loved you without strings

Wrapping you in laughter’s warmth
inspiring within you all the very best
of being a man, your protectiveness
your tenderness and passion

it’s been friendship that exploded
into a volcano of love and desire
a getting to know you that made me
have to know….. all about you

What you think, what you feel
how you cope with the dirt life dishes out
how you kiss and the magic you do
alone with me between the sheets

I won’t hurt you, Love, never on purpose
and hopefully never at all in any way
You are what I had only hoped
others were before realizing they weren’t

Be comfortable and comforted
within the beauty of my love
as I am within the security of yours
There are no strings, chains, ropes

Except the love that binds our hearts together

Having read this yesterday, I found I couldn't reply, given its identity was overwhelming. Few of us have such an experience, and fewer survive the experience's challenge. The pain of its loss is, at times, too much to bear. Beautifully penned.

As I read it was clear this is a love letter to your significant other outlining all the ways that has made your love so strong. May that wonderful feeling continue for both of you as you embark on your new life together.

Especially when you're doing those dirty dishes together--a chuckle I gathered from one of the stanzas.
