Blinding Light

We sometimes forget we have choices, even though they are causal in nature

Poem Artwork
Blinding Light

We discovered them

There's a place
We all know it
Main street America
That place where
Deals are done by them
Innocents become guilty
Trials are tried

We learned about them

This place that starts early
Schools short of everything
Lined paper
Pencils with erasers
Full length crayons
Chalk stubs
No sticks
While administrators laugh
All the way to the bank

We tried them

That place of the first job
The first date
The first car
The first seduction

We enticed them

Some found the glitter place
Where 3 piece suits
Came from Brooks Bros.
Not J.C. Penny
Where 2 martini lunches
Boded well the norm
Trumping yesteryear's
Big Macs and cokes

We joined them

Where going home
Meant driver driven
Doorman opened
Gilded elevator ascent
Retreating to glass enclosed
Marble floored
24 hr surround-life
Our own delusions
Our own voice
Our own mirrored image
Our own terraced view

Some
Looked out

Some
Looked skyward

Some
Looked down

Thirty-eight floors below
The everyday people
The ones making possible this dreamer's mold
This insulated veneer
The platinum exterior
Covering...

Blinding light?

Look away

I once ascended the ivory tower in Minneapolis, and from the 38th floor saw through the wrap-around window of an immense boardroom, the blinding light of make-believe. I looked away...and walked away,
And my vision has improved with each passing year.

Like my English professor reviewer of one of my poems called Multiversity declared, “cynical.” That's the way I view this image of a city as a brilliant light that all the moths are attracted to.

...and when we reach the illuminated bubble
do we think we are now illuminati? Do we confuse outer light
with inner or settle for outer because we know no better?
Again, Odin, as in previous recent work your lines
are short sharp shocks, uncompromising jabs of truth;
i sense you feel this deeply and you certainly impart
the intensity to this appreciative reader.

Terrific touch on a cold truth. Isn't this the promise of Heaven? It surely isn't Iowa. Thanks.

Odin, I don't think I've ever read any of your poems just once through. That is a pretty neat thing, I think. And I know I've read some of them four and five times. Also wonderful; that complexity, that 'soaking' it in. This one is a ringer. The overall effect is stunning because the build-up is masterful. The first four stanzas perplexed my assimilation of who this 'them' implicated. You slap my attention awake with this line: "Innocents become guilty." And "Pencils with erasers/Full length crayons" really got to me. By the time I read "We joined them," it was chilling. How effective I found your choice of floors: "Thirty-eight floors below," giving us the exact measure of HOW uupppp we are talking are those "glass enclosed/Marble floored" -- This is such an effective head-shaking truth through poetry. An acute vision. Maybe I'll look away from the Blinding light, but surely not this poem. ~~ Diana
