Hours Are But...

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Perhaps the invention of time represents a disservice to Nature’s perfection. We are, after all, the only species that has become a slave to the clock. (Image by robgbob)

Poem Artwork
Hours Are But…
by Odin Roark

While vacationing
I spent some sunset time
Gazing at a seagull gazing back at me
Unaware that Man feels
Seconds of internal ticking
Minutes not sure of moments forward
Existence becoming part of
Time’s incessant record keeping

Yet for some of us

Beneath the hours
Rests presence unqualified
A blank landscape of beingness
Unsullied by imposed measurement

Such simplicity
This seagull
A Jonathan-Livingston-lately
Remaining so patient
As I sail Triscuits
Down upon his tiered rooftop
A sort of many-feathered
Beachside soup kitchen

How rudimentary this creature’s time
This winged creation
Unaware of its millennia ancestry
Yet of wisdom atop its ocean history

Plumed innocence
Knowing well its life force
Is merely one of Nature’s many entertaining enlightenments
Begging notice while we count the hours
Becoming days into years
Before arguably advancing
Our rumination’s pride
Into delusional nostalgia

sometimes the simplest forms of nature can elicit that longing to return, especially when we see time has moved forward fast, the saying, "before you know it", a wrinkle here, there, our body aged. The true telling that time has moved forward. My perspective. As I've said before, when it comes to poetry, we all see/hear/read into things differently and just because it is different does not mean any of it is wrong. Each has their little perch with a different view.

Disservice to Nature's perfection indeed, Odin. I like how you capitalize "Nature" and "Man." It sets those nouns up in stature for extra weight. You have presented well the "...blank landscape of beingness" with this gull and the patience "gazing back at me." I like the way you present the contrast of Man next to Nature "Knowing well its life force," as we "...count the hours" instead of being part of such simplicity. Also Triscuit instead of cracker made me smile! ~~ Diana

Thankfully, over the years I've learned a thing or two from the wise creatures like your seagull. I now mark time by the Four Seasons, as they do, not by my watch. And right now, I'm thinking about what to plant in my Spring Garden.

There are many other things besides the clock that we, the humans, have created to govern ourselves. Everything is our own making. Birds and bees are no difference, they have their own rules too. They know what to do, and when to do it. Where and when they should fly to get away from the cold. The time is all in their heads. They don't need clocks.

Animals and birds, etc., may not watch the clock, but they do pay attention to their needs and basically do the same thing day in and day out to satisfy those needs, much like we do as we watch our clocks.
