The game of security is such a challenge, often played outside the inner-self, i.e., a wager persuasively dealt with faceless cards. (Image by Wendy Helps)

Poem Artwork
Home
by Odin Roark

So often said: Home is where you make it.
Yet, how amorphous we’ve made this word,
From a Bric-à-brac sentiment,
To a cave in the mountains of the Middle East.

Wherever the word,
The image of roots,
Of foundation,
Of longing for anywhere safe,
Absorbs the weary mind of modern man.
There exists the shadow of reality,
That place most accept not of,
That realm of belonging
That knows no geographical spot on a map,
No neighborhood landmark of childhood,
No definitive place of beginnings.

Yet…

That place within,
Where when all else fails,
When landlord,
Mortgage bank,
Or friend/relative says: Time’s up,
Such becomes the special place of epiphanies.

Some may say such is fantasy.
Others might say “within” is all one needs,
That sanctuary where the “all” is.

Still…

Many will hold such thoughts are those of madmen,
Knowing not why the madness of truth remains so sublime
In the castle of honesty’s acceptance.

The elimination of home as a concrete place with active connections to multiple generations, bonded and inseparable, rips asunder the iron chain that for eons past had secured us to at least some sense of certainty, some sense of purpose. Between the war driven refugees and the bank driven debtors, we now have a world that was once only fit for dogs, as we are now feeding off of the scraps of our keepers. M.True

'Amorphous' indeed. As to my take... Your opening verse creates such a 'modern world' juxtapose in my mind. I an acquainted with that place you evoke in these cogitations. And I believe each person's is a little different. I have escaped into mine regularly to find solace, inspiration, and direction. My wife, Michele, has her special place as well. And I try to join her there as often as I can. It's called Hallmark movies. Hahaha. She calls it her 'fuzzy bubble escape'. Hahahahaha... true. Not a word to anyone about this, Kent, or I will be forced to deny it. Hahahahahaha. Appreciate the images this one conjures in the synapses. Security is often elusive and conditional. You have inspired me. Thanks. Peace...

There's nothing like the feeling of being home. That feeling alone is a sense of security. However, like your poem suggests, that can be shattered in a moment because security is relative and serendipity is random.
