Fjords of the MInd

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

To live is to experience the mystery of not knowing much until that time comes when one allows honesty to be his or her mantra. The alternative is to succumb to the dictate or doctrine of others' experience… as if it is your own. (Image by Rob Gonsalves)

Poem Artwork
Fjords of the Mind
by Odin Roark

How proudly the pocketknife carves deeply
this first notch of playground conquest,
giving Johnny G second thoughts
about the new King of Mumbly-peg.

Later…

Challenges find teen battlefields,
street-smart words crossing swords,
gang-spawned tempests that rain down,
into graffiti tsunamis chiseling turf,
smearing posters,
fences, subways, buildings,
rebellious angst using notches of false pride
to challenge acceptance of love.

Even later…

When ambition merges
relationships and work life,
labor forging deep into married life
domestic life arousing new insecurities,
where more depressions are to be made
into adulthood’s ever-changing landscape
continuing like the slow evolvement
of ebb and tide,
happiness and despair,
making clear failure is not an option,
retreat never an escape.

Finally…

With some lessons learned,
maturity gazes upon the high walls carved,
the protection and/or captivity of experience,
the playground belt but a remnant of beginnings,
having given way to a persistent notching,
carving, cutting, digging,
of the deeper journey,
leaving erosion behind
in order to think, be beyond the now.

For…

Wisdom needs not a celebrate conquest,
knowing well life's purpose is to realize its own chiasmic sculpture,
its embracing of yesterday’s tributaries into the mind’s final fjord,
where the never ending evolvement into reborn arroyos
joins the sweep of cosmic verve into cyclic wonder
seeking yet another beginning…

once more.

It is really too bad that so many young people have to go through these phases before they reach maturity. One would only hope that that first phase of elevated testosterone could be channeled into more productive activity than "marking territory" and self-destructive behavior. And the subjugation to the drudgery of work and family obligation needs to be reconsidered as well because even though so many work at it, it doesn't work out well for many.

Finally, that last phase should never be a hardening of the attitudes.

Quite Profound, My Friend.

the corkscrew rule is better to execute with a gimlet, not a pocketknife, but. . . as is fairly said, "retreat never an escape," the final fjord of mind, which by definition has neither yesterday nor tomorrow, is not the final while a huge crevice is there. . . so, follow the crevice to reach the ocean. This cascade of symbols and hints is a great manual for a neurosurgeon ;)) Thank you for cycling this, Odin; otherwise, without another beginning it's hard to continue the drilling of our mind. . . Cheers, alex

Some profound thoughts surrounding the symbolic image of carving, starting out in the playground (that we have all experienced) and ending up in the mind (that perhaps not everyone has experienced), in the search for new beginnings. An uplifting poem evocative of hardship and change resulting in a carving through rock with the power to transform. Nicely done, a fine idea beautifully executed.
