Healing Unconsciousness

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Ever notice the media obsession with tragedy or fear, given the media's blood lust for anything that will garner eyeballs to the printed page or the myriad of screens available. Herein is an editorial/prosetry rendering of conscience... at least for those who deem themselves conscious.

Poem Artwork
Healing Unconsciousness
by Odin Roark

A bird or moth’s wing will flap,
Until it can't.
A road will survive with patches,
Until it can't.
A bridge will transport in spite of cracks,
Until it can't.

The heart can survive bleakness,
but often it doesn’t know how.

What power inspires mind over matter?
What drives the heart’s engine of resolve?

Unlike we humans…

Rain-rich clouds provide
earth's abundance,
a nature knowing of harvest.

Yet…

Even with emotional acuity
Man's tenacity can succumb to the heart's drought.

Oh, the substitutes…

Not even tomorrow's Apple or Samsung product
can provide a lasting change or dressing for the wound,
the shielding of inexorable viscous fluids of hate,
those all white blood cells of mind's cellular debris,
this tissue of what was once the heart,
now pumping polluted hope,
coagulating sentient struggle into lesions of discharge,
providing nourishment for but the process of exudation.

And yet…

A starving and famished morality
staggers across a dust bowl of impoverishment,
needing less parental life-models,
less religiosity mocking secular common sense,
needing even less of modern man's material cure all.

Is this our living frailty in search of answers?

Perhaps…

Some additional honest spirit of heart and mind
can overcome the airborne toxins of empty words,
vacuous actions,
deceitful intent,
commerce healing not the needy,
but enslaving minions with duplicity.

However…

One can hope,
even as remedies continue to grow by proxy,
with shiny A.I. products in hand,
forever replacing the ability to reach down,
pick up that bird or helpless moth whose wings are in need,
and provide a healing only the open heart can assure?

To know such a person,
to love such a person,
is indeed a piece of consciousness to treasure.

There is little but illusion in this our modern life. Sesitivity is for figertips on keypads. When will we see the healers and peacekeepers softly touching the world in their true majesty? Perhaps in the fading memories of old men...

Nothing can take the place of, or even compare to, authentic human connection. Kindred souls are rare anymore. To this reader; there is subtext in this that feels like an expression of appreciation to someone special who understands, supports, encourages, appreciates, and respects the writer. Enjoyed.
Peace to you...

I remember as a child rescuing several animal/insects that were wounded. Can't say that I nursed any of them back to health--all died.

While I didn't connect your lead line to your poem, it certainly connected to what is happening this morning. For over three hours, my local TV station has preempted everything else to report endlessly on six people shot in a shopping center, one critical and one seriously, three released with minor injuries. The shooter, apparently a lawyer, a partner in a law firm, with military weapons in his very expensive Porsche convertible has been neutralized (Newspeak for shot dead) and the story is basically over. But it will drone on and on for hours with helicopters overhead forging fear and everyone in Houston to run out and get a gun to protect themselves in case a crazy lawyer starts shooting at them in their cars in shopping center parking lots.

In reference to John's statement. I see videos all the time of people coming to the rescue of poor defenseless people and creatures. Sure, some are too busy with their noses stuck in their cell phones, but there are always those who will help.

The heartless world you describe is all too real in today's world. The "helpless bird" or "moth" wouldn't even be noticed much less picked up. Still your poem provides hope to the "anxious heart" at the end, the one waiting for "a piece of consciousness". John
