Genocidal Con

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

In today’s world, we can’t help but wonder if some pandemic, perpetual war or climate change will be our end. Might Theodore Dreiser’s line in Sister Carrie, “How true it is that words are but vague shadows of the volumes we mean” provide a certain kind of sustenance for the conscious? Especially in an election season, there’s something to be said in living knowledgeably and thoroughly to the end, respecting the vast majority of regulations are for Nature and man’s survival. Such resilient sentience is an honorarium and a gift. (Image by Xetobyte)

Poem Artwork
Genocidal Con
by Odin Roark

Oh to stay conscious
amidst heavy sky
as Nature and man turns on itself.

Air so laden with mental waste,
bridling the leaf and flower
with faux caresses of duplicity,
continues delivering putrefaction
smothered in the Air-Wick of deceit.

Enemies impervious to wakefulness
focus on the brain’s chemical vulnerability,
where awareness starvation succumbs to rainbow poison
sheening our waters, providing but hopeful mirages for the mind,
coating existence to become but dust,
a vanquished erosion of life,
where time's inevitable vortex of failed reason,
becomes pretension’s victory,
rational man’s demise.

Sadly…

Too many of our species of reason
stand stoic atop fantasized castle walls,
peering through distorted lenses
at fields and oceans below,
ignorant that humankind’s narcissism
will ultimately succumb to piranha-infested moats.

How pernicious our abused living,
becoming skeletal throw-away,
continuing unrealized,
trumpeting blindness into the growing echo
of a vacuous Neverland.

When might we learn
tenacious self-destruction
ultimately becomes its own wind-blown waste?

But…

Like a well played chess game,
patience continues to survive,
even as some delusional board pieces
recklessly rush forward,
believing the game is theirs to control.

Ignorant of their own locust-like gluttony,
such people continue to prostrate their allegiance to the genocidal con,
while some of us choose to remain resolute,
our feet always seeking stable ground,
peering into the potential darkness…
wide-awake.

I finally got around to reading, "Sister Carrie," a few months ago. I don't know for sure, but I feel that I may be among those you describe as "mental waste." We are not all cut from the same cloth, Odin, and thank goodness for that, what a boring place if that were so.

This is a stern warning told with thoughtful buffering between the hordes and the sensibles being ever-mindful that extinction hangs in the balance. As I recall Einstein and Oppenheimer voiced the same warnings.

A brilliant description of the narcissistic times that we live and that we cannot seem to escape. John

A boiling pot of mentation and metaphor. Thanks for enlightening us about humanities raging neuroticism and the escalating spiritual war on this planet.
