Holiday, Oohs, Aahs, and Tears

Many believe the spirit of Christmas is but an enigma today. They may be right.

Poem Artwork
Holiday Oohs, Aahs, and Tears

“‘Tis greater to give than receive,”
begging the question: “Of what?”

Stuff remains the easy answer,
cloaked in its brightly colored paper and ribbons,
urging “Oohs and Aahs” from receivers
few can resist.

But what of a kind gesture in place of goods,
the finding of compassion and sympathy for the truly less fortunate,
exercising that ephemeral spark of humanity once primary,
but now rapidly becoming an endangered principal of our democracy.

Hope hangs on…

The aware heart knows,
like much of nature,
humanoids can’t last forever,
that gathering of a materialistic image,
buttressing the seductive illusions of generosity,
be they religious or secular,
knows only an all-consuming downward spiral,
a self-destructive glitter that blinds
as it drills deeper into itself,
disintegrating at the end
into the loss of “caring,”
fate’s special delivery
to a wide-awake darkness.

How habitual these temporal leanings.

How belittling to what consciousness once was.

My son, daughter, and I were so poor at one time that they drew pictures for me and we baked a birthday cake for Jesus. We still do that but now we can buy presents!

Love ya!

if we are, humanoids, try to sell some sites on the surface of the moon, why not to sell the Chistmas which has been created for that purpose?! as well as all the other (holy)days. . . bargain, bargain, and bargain once more; this is what we are, the humanoids at the present phase, but who cannot last forever. Cheers, alex

You had me thinking about how Christmas has now been tied up in the mall. Where once we got together in houses, shared what little we had, drank and ate our local fare, played games and sang songs as we enjoyed the season, snow or not. Today, families are far-flung, only get together after long drives or delayed flights, only to go to the mall where the Santa Claus is and all the bargains are beautifully decorated so that we can buy our way to happiness.

It does seem that something is lost. But then, I have spent so many years alone without seeing any family, Christmas comes and goes with little impact on me. I neither disappointed nor elated.

And that's why I think this over hyped and commercialized holiday should only come once every 5 years.

"humanoids can’t last forever,"

I believe that completely, Odin. There is a reason for that decline and it seems we would understand it and curb our selfish nature.

Indeed, you are so right, generosity, compassion, a charity, a smile are all rare commodities these days or as you say "an endangered principal of our democracy."
