Honduran Night Wars

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Even as news broke of his administration’s decision to end temporary protected status for Honduran immigrants who have been in the United States since 1999, President Trump railed against immigrants from that country and others.
“You’ve all seen, on television, all over the papers. The illegal migrants, pouring up through Mexico, flooding the border,” he said during a speech at the National Rifle Association convention on Friday. “Many from Central America — Honduras, all over the place. Coming up by the thousands. We’re stopping them at different fronts.”
“But we don’t have laws,” Trump added. “We have laws that were written by people that truly could not love our country.” – Washington Post

When this photo was taken in 2014, the family in it was crying with joy. Now the woman at right, a Honduran with TPS who’s lived in the US since 1998, could be forced into the shadows. Sarah L. Voisin/The Washington Post via Getty

What memories must these people be going through with this latest threat?

Honduran Night Wars

To go back there…

I can’t forget long dark nights of anxious dreams,
visiting every place I’ve ever lived, escaped, survived,
even the house where I was born,
sitting in my parent’s bedroom straining to hear the clock,
using the tick, tick, tick to try to fall asleep.

My closed eyes bring the darkness of the old neighborhood,
searching for friends,
some dead, some hiding, some barely alive.
I wander into junk-filled back yards
where once green-leafed trees now waver,
weak, stripped of life,
looking like war’s crippled results on crutches.

Some nights…

My dreams take me to a tree stump of long ago,
Grandma’s chopping block for beheading chicken dinners,
amidst the chaos of roosters and hens
still with their heads attached
scampering for safety.

And then…

The battle worn black cat slips out of the shadows,
rubs herself against my willing legs,
letting me know once again
she’ll be my nocturnal guide.

Such night wars take me scrambling over debris,
dodging random bullets,
corrupt military,
power hungry gangs,
chasing me and the cat
into a cowering huddle in the shadows,
remembering so many missing faces,
always ready for more newly born ghosts.
