Belonging
by Odin Roark

Belonging to one’s parents
is to know the confinement of possession.

Belonging to one’s job
is to know entrapment of the Peter Principal.

Belonging to one’s mate
is to know the tenuousness of identity.

Belonging to one’s aloneness
is to know the loss of contact.

Belonging to oneself

is to know Nature’s inherent purpose.

Oh, how much do I love this? Too much! What we must go through to come to this realization. Superb thought waves!

Love ya!

The word "belonging" seems to denote ownership and required loyalty. But the "selfish gene" in us requires that we, alone, seek to survive. Some may call this "freedom." But in each of us there is a primal directive that is behind all of our action. And it is to break the bonds of belonging and individually become who we will become, regardless of our forced relationships.

Short, but I think this is one of your best. So much said in just a few words.

As good a summation of life
as I have ever read. A classic.

"Belonging to one's mate is to know the tenuousness of identity." That is one of the reasons some people never marry. In loving, they give up too much of themselves. A fine idea well executed, so much so I would love to steal the title cuz it has set my mind rolling.

WoW! You gave true meaning to your sweet poem, Odin. Your poem has been received well down here in the swamp. Excellent interaction of the innerself child. Not all can write such a revealing poetry.
