Lessons

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

- There are some quotes that make a difference in our lives, e.g., “There are no mistakes, only lessons. A lesson is repeated until learned.” Having made an effort to adhere to this Buddha quote, “It is better to travel well than to arrive,” came this exploration of prosetry.

Poem Artwork

Lessons

I remain aware of the single lightbulb

hanging behind me,

for…

Somewhere way back,

someone, I don’t remember his name,

had me sit and listen.

So silent it was.

Such was my introduction to what I thought a game,

a process remaining a compulsion

to play each night of every day.

Having never been told any rules or discerned

who or what was supposed to represent an outcome,

I’ve continued to work it again and again,

an effort to find the point.

I still hear that stillness,

that nothingness that I’ve waited so long

to find a reason for this incessant listening.

Even as I study my silhouette on the wall,

the shadow outline of my gravity worn body

slumped on a seat,

shadow-viewing the man I’ve been becoming for so long,

like a person waiting in a phone booth for the

out of service phone to ring.

Suddenly…

Like a deck of cards being shuffled,

I look back at the light bulb,

where a fluttering moth bides time,

its instinct for the light’s alluring persuasion

making its manic brain too wired to sleep…

like me.

Then…

Silence.

Might query become ponderance,

making the conundrum...

unanswerable,

even as every other night,

a peaceful state of mind takes over?

Some very nice similes. And the analogy of the moth attracted to the light with the inability to sleep is a very good one.

Last night we lost air-conditioning. My house does not ventilate well with the windows open, so she brought in a water fan to cool my bedroom. It sounded like wind and rain on a roof. That should have been soothing and help me sleep. But instead, it was aggravating and the wind created bothered my altered feeling on my skin. Got only about two hours sleep. My AC man doesn't answer the phone on weekends, so that lightbulb will bother me all night until tomorrow morning when I hope to get the AC fixed. I had an expensive AC replacement a couple of years ago.

We have only to look at the moth seeking the light to understand lessons never learned. Perhaps one day . . . .
