Life Beyond Earth

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

There are even more potentially habitable planets near Earth than we ever imagined. A research team discovered two Earth-like planets in our cosmic backyard, and they're located in the perfect zone for water to form on their presumably rocky surfaces.
The planets orbit a sun known as "Teegarden's star," which is only 12.5 light-years from Earth. (A light-year is the distance that light travels in a year, or roughly 6 trillion miles or 10 trillion kilometers.) The two planets look an awful lot like Earth and our neighboring worlds, the researchers said. - space.com 7/2/19

Life Beyond Earth

How elusive
This hide and seek cosmos
Allowing us to remain
But a blip
Tenuously safe
On Time's infinite screen

Existence forever changing
Lures man's eyes and ears
Toward layers of nothingness
Whose density
Remains temptingly
The everything of epiphany's lair

To be there with distant stars
We exercise our prerogative
We dream another learned entitlement
Continuing to play out assumed superiority

Yet for some thinkers
Perceived freedom
With its implied randomness
Remains an unrealistic concept
Logic dictating correct thought and action
Conclusively deterministic

For dialectics can develop conclusions
Arising from given sets of postulates or premises
But resignedly
That is all it can do
Incapable of generating premises itself
Resulting experience remains sterile
Capable only to expand
Not to grow
Such a state being void of creative ability

Still

Our spec-identity on infinity's screen
Deludes itself with a Pac-Man sense of conquest
Consuming all it can
Unaware its insatiability

This paradox of creativity and devouring
Will inevitably reduce our sentient existence
To an even smaller blip
Eventuating cosmic dust
Swirling within reason's captivity
Perhaps paving the only way
To be with the distant stars

What a thought your words are! The youth are hearing facts about what I, as a child, would never have dreamed of attaining! What a mess the populace has left them. No wonder they are overdosing, seeking therapy, or, for the better, letting their voices be heard like Greta! Odin, this is a very thought provoking piece! Very cool.

Love ya!

If there is life out there on other planets, I hope they're more intelligent than us.

Fascinating. We always envision alien beings as weirdly alien; but what if they were just like us, except they were on another planet with another solar system, with different languages, religions, cultures, different everything. Now that would be interesting.
