Poem Artwork

Happiness

I am a giant oak tree

shading a small sidewalk café

whose simple neon sign proclaims,

“Cold Beer – Hot Coffee”,

breaking through the summer dusk.

The lone patron sipping his espresso,

is everyone’s father

hunched over his newspaper’s dreary headlines,

unaware of the young waitress

about to serve him his third espresso.

And here be I

with a multitudinous amount of leaves,

not one of which has cause to stir,

so enchanted with happiness are we.

"I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree."...............Joyce Kilmer

I am having difficulty seeing the happiness in this poem. The oak tree is a silent observer. As is "everyone's father." More interested in reading the news then what is happening around him. The three espressos which signify addiction leading to sleeplessness.

Thought-provoking. The Oak, slow growing and long living. How was it said... The greatest Oak was once a little nut who held its ground. In that little acorn is the blueprint for another Oak. Amazing. However we analogize it, whenever we are happy, we are the better versions of ourselves. Thanks for sharing. Peace... r

Ah, the elusive state of happiness, elusive even for poets to describe. Through nature, you have captured something of its natural state, just being what it is. Unhappiness seems to be a state of mind and not a reality in nature.
