Conscience

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Each day, lessons are offered for learning or ignoring. Inevitably, personal principles are challenged. To be of dishonesty is to die. To be of truth is to live. (Image by pinterst)

Poem Artwork

Conscience

By day…

Take or be taken

Score or lose

 Ignore standards

Cheat to avoid your moral sense

Throw scruples into the punch bowl of irresponsibility

Embrace deafness of your inner voice

By night…

How cavalier some treat their inward monitor

Ignoring its endless network of informants

Until into nocturnal dreams

Arresting of your secrets disturbs your breathing

While some psyches momentarily escape by projecting

Reform school in the future

Prisons in the future

Execution of the mind

As the tossing and turning

Like an out of control car

Avoiding the looming cliff

Careens ever closer to the threat of confession

By each turn of life’s calendar…

Such people without the sense of right and wrong

Become victims of themselves

Especially on Capitol Hill

I had occasion to visit a couple of headhunters in DC. For a substantial price, they promised me a spot in one of the many government agencies. From there I could probably get into the revolving door between industry and government that is so lucrative for those who wish to push the bull or pull it according to their various desire. Loyalty regarded as necessary in order to continue on without much conscience for what one is doing.

So glad I stayed out of politics and joined the hated ultra liberal left ivory tower for my career.

Your poem clearly points out the problem. And it is us.

between lobbyists and cronyism, we're sliding into an abyss from which there's no escape, and the voice of the people can't be heard above the exchanging of money.

I have given up thinking or caring about people on Capital Hill. Power corrupts and corruption seems to seek out power. It's only the truly powerful who can avoid the temptation of corruption, and such people no longer seem to exist.
