Loneliness of the Long-Distance Walker

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

With so many voting this year, one is reminded of the many who long to be a part of the process but are kept at bay. For those seeking asylum, we can only hope a possible dictatorship here, doesn’t become worse than the suffering they left in their mother country. (Painting by Victor Bauer)

Loneliness of the Long-Distance Walker

Should the election go a certain way…

He was alone.

A man no one chose to know.

Years end loomed.

He wondered if he would finally vanish,

Enjoin the melee of politically scorned,

Destination unknown,

Mode of transport unknown,

Reality exchanged for…

Unknown.

He wandered the beach,

Incessantly searching for attachment,

Finally huddling beneath driftwood,

Meagerly camouflaging his émigré identity.

His sadness was like that of the gulls,

Pursuing scraps and Dorito chips,

Hoping for similar luck surviving

Conscious that I.C.E. had different goals to follow.

In the distance,

The echo of a radio

Announced the election results.

He made himself smaller under

The feeble cover.

They would be coming.

Your poem foretells something that I did not know. That bringing out "the vote," would also cause more people to join the bandwagon or reveal that they are Trump people with the same prejudice towards newcomers.

What the long walk is all about is the well-being of the family back home. At first it's sending money back home and living in miserable conditions with the hope of going back home wealthy. When that doesn't happen, staying on for the freedom for social mobility that comes with hard work and entrepreneurship.

The truth is, rather than having oppressive dictators where they come from, we should provide them with freedom in their own countries, by doing so they will wish to stay there we will wish to take the walk there ourselves.
