Eternal

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

In an era where one pandemic may give way to a fresh Omicron surge making one’s home
akin to the bomb shelters of London ala German air raids long ago. (image by World Health Organization depicting Omicron virus)

Poem Artwork

Eternal

Hope springs eternal

For some

For others

Not so much

As the future rushed forward…

Come evening

He took his walk

Passing bordered up shops

Graffiti laden walls

Occasional overturned garbage cans

Turning the corner…

He found some store windows

Had their own reveries

When discovered

They darkened

Appeared surprised seeing him

And not the usual

Body dysmorphic disorder victim

Strolling up to cop a reflection

“Lost soul, where have you been”

He thought he heard whispered from the glass

As he made his way to his car

Parked alone in a lot beneath the bridge

Offering favored peeks at the moonlit bay beyond

This night

A solitary sailboat

Headed bravely out to sea

Perhaps trusting

Hope will spring eternal

Hope and viruses are eternal. Read somewhere there are at least 3000 viruses. Some we have suppressed into loneliness by vaccines, but most are still out there, both saving us and killing us in kind and unkind ways.

Your poem, in spite of illustrating what a total lockdown of all human activity would be like, seems to have a spark of continuation with the walk and the sailboat venturing out into the dangerous unknown.

I believe we will survive this latest Omicron mutation while we are still fighting Delta. With the usual overkill of information always leading to suspicion and misinterpretation.

So much to respond to in this writing. Even the introduction comparing disease home quarantine to bomb sheltering is spot on in conveying threat to life. I like the image of future rushing forward, as though future itself is a propelled entity. Enjoyed your implementing one of my favorite aspects of your writing….personification — of vocal windows being surprised to see the man who is not a mirror-seeker: playful way to say it “Strolling up to cop a reflection” and bravery of a boat trusting the wind. Dysmorphic and reveries went straight to The Google. Hope I can remember them. ~~ djl
