Here Now There Then

- It is such a global malady, the self-punishment of that which
exists to provide but mistakes that are there for lessons. (Painting by Cezara Danilov)

Poem Artwork

Here Now There Then

By what journey

What navigation

What inordinate guidance

Might those of the There Then

Find their way back to the Here Now?

The past remains such a lure

A fear of the unknown

Often with scars still bleeding

Amidst the many that refuse to open their eyes

Trusting instead

The lethargic comfort

Of the opaque blackness of the past.

Such sadness…

Will envelop those who remain convinced

Blooming can never become a harvest

Budding is lost to the gales of the past

Seeding but the scattering of hopelessness.

That “parting is not such sweet sorrow,”

But without resistance,

The sealing of doors of a new coalescence

A separation of touch and breath

The vacuum of one’s airless floating

In a walled-off future

Without the here now

Willing to gasp at the new air

The new possibility.

One must…

Believe whatever is not the worst thing

That ever happened to itself.

How glorious

The possibilities

For those willing

To embrace the here now

Allowing the then there

To just be that…

A vacuum of flotation

Expunged.

I could read this two ways. Nature's ravages cannot be helped. We know not what the future really holds with them. But with people, the past tells us, that war and Machiavellian behavior causes more grief and never is "glorious victory." The same is true of family affairs rivalries and desertions, no good comes of them, either. Except as you write, "blocked paths of communication."

If only we could open the future to opening up reasonable conversation, so many ills would disappear.

It is an interesting conundrum, living in the "here now" or the "there then" as you say. I suspect that many people do indeed live in the past, possibly to recapture youth in some way, or because they were successful once but have now become "outdated". In any event, it's the here and now that is of special interest. There is no other time at our disposal so we should use it wisely. Interesting poem.
