All Weather Warmth

The immediacy of texting and e-mail has all but eradicated the charm of a letter. Pen and paper is becoming but folk history now.

Poem Artwork

All Weather Warmth

A moment in past times,

When to be in a mailbox

During a wintery howling wind event

Meant the safeguarding of a warm letter,

Knowing the personal touch of distance

Was closer than you thought.

The glint of magic

Is now replaced by the inundation of communication

Made digitally common.

For some of us,

Receiving a few keystrokes in place of yesterday’s living ink

Harkens us back to an era of memories

That may not be as permanent,

But where handwriting

Holds a special spot

In the ever-faithful

Mailbox warmth

Of mind,

Of heart.

Such an astute observation and so true. Something has been lost. Having lived much of my adult life living abroad, in Europe and then so much time in the Middle East, I was an avid letter writer, particularly the extensive correspondence I always maintained with my mother, until she succumbed to Alzheimer's that took away here memory. I especially love your last four lines.

Great poem! I love handwritten notes. A grade school friend and I became pen-pals some years ago, and it has been a gratifying experience. Writing a letter by hand is a unique and thought-provoking way to communicate, inviting greater honesty and reflection. Thanks for sharing, Odin.
